When God chose Abram to be the founder his chosen nation, He commanded him to circumcise himself. Afterwards, God changed his name to Abraham. Ever since, every Jewish father has his son circumcised on the eight day after his baby is born, followed by a baby naming.

The circumcision ceremony is called a bris, or a brit milah . This is literally translated as "the covenant of the circumcision." Every Bris Milah ceremony is usually divided into three parts:

  1. The circumcision (milah)
  2. Baby naming (keriat ha’shem)
  3. The party (seudah) or meal.

Since most fathers do not wish to perform the circumcision themselves, they ask a mohel, who is a Jewish circumciser, to do the bris for them. A mohel is a trained expert on the medical procedure and precautions relevant to circumcision, and on the Jewish laws and custom regarding the ceremony.
